The Merchant of Venice: Act IV sc i - Portia

PORTIA

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

Othello (Act I sc iii) - Iago

It is merely a lust of the blood and a permission of
the will. Come, be a man. Drown thyself! drown
cats and blind puppies. I have professed me thy
friend and I confess me knit to thy deserving with
cables of perdurable toughness; I could never
better stead thee than now. Put money in thy
purse; follow thou the wars; defeat thy favour with
an usurped beard; I say, put money in thy purse. It
cannot be that Desdemona should long continue her
love to the Moor,-- put money in thy purse,--nor he
his to her: it was a violent commencement, and thou
shalt see an answerable sequestration:--put but
money in thy purse. These Moors are changeable in
their wills: fill thy purse with money:--the food
that to him now is as luscious as locusts, shall be
to him shortly as bitter as coloquintida. She must
change for youth: when she is sated with his body,
she will find the error of her choice: she must
have change, she must: therefore put money in thy
purse. If thou wilt needs damn thyself, do it a
more delicate way than drowning. Make all the money
thou canst: if sanctimony and a frail vow betwixt
an erring barbarian and a supersubtle Venetian not
too hard for my wits and all the tribe of hell, thou
shalt enjoy her; therefore make money. A pox of
drowning thyself! it is clean out of the way: seek
thou rather to be hanged in compassing thy joy than
to be drowned and go without her.

SHAKESPEARE SPEECH " KING HENRY"

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility,
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger.
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage.
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect,
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon, let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swilled with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath, and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English,
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof,
Fathers that like so many Alexanders
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument.
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you called fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeomen,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding- which I doubt not,
For there is none of you so mean and base
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot.
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

SHOULD DICTATORS BE ASSASINATED( practice speech) edited work

Should dictators be assassinated? Would there assassination really  bring peace to the world we stand on today? would we really take the risk of sparking another war? or  would their replacement be any better? I am completely against the assassination of dictators.

 Many people may think “why shouldn’t we kill a dictator and have him replaced by someone much less destructive?”  The dictator may have someone standing by to take his place,  So we must not take the risk of assassination because how do we know that the person taking the dictators place is going to be any less destructive?

Do you know how world war one started? The arch duke Franz Ferdinand, air to the Hungarian throne was assassinated, this started off a huge chain reaction of problems in all the countries around the world being the main reason why world war one started, this was the biggest war in the history of man and millions of lives were lost, assassinating a dictator may possibly cause the same thing. Do you want to be responsible for the death of millions?
There were many assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler one famous attempt where a time bomb was planted was placed in a meeting consisting of 7 nazi’s and Adolf Hitler in 1933, Munich. All seven nazi’s were killed and Adolf Hitler was on wounded. This assassination attempt would of only infuriated Hitler, encouraging him to seize his power even more. This assassination attempts may of sparked world war 2. A south Korean tried to poison Kim John Ill,'s son and failed due to an insufficient amount of poison and  very speedy medical care. This is another failed assassination attempt, how would you feel if your son or your mum or dad was  assassinated?How would you react if you were one of the most powerful man in the world?.  You know where this is leaning and you would not want to risk failure.

World war one started because Franz Ferdinand was assassinated, world war two may of been sparked by many assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler before the war. Do you want to be responsible for world war three? With the nuclear power that these dictators have their hands on today, do you want to put the whole world in jeopardy? Do you want to be responsible for  the death of millions? I hope you all now know the real and serious consequences of assassination.

SHOULD DICTATORS BE ASSASINATED( practice speech)

 Should dictators be assassinated? Would there assassination really  bring peace to the world we stand on today? I strongly disagree That assassinators should be assassinated. Would the result really be beneficial?

 Many people may think “why shouldn’t we kill a dictator and have him replaced by someone much less destructive?”  The dictator may have someone standing by to take his place,  So we must not take the risk of assassination because how do we know that the person taking the dictators place is going to be any better?

DRAFT SPEECH ( SHOULD DICTATORS BE ASSASINATED)

Should dictators be assassinated ( Notes/info)

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's first son Kim Jong-nam survived an assassination attempt. This is an example of a failed assasination attempt.
WW1:
The assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand air to the Hungarian throne started of a chain reaction, ultimately becoming the reason why world war 1 started where millions of people lost their lives.

Lybia and Gadaffi:
Libyan rebels fighting against Gaddafi’s regime have, according to several different sources, shot down two Syrian war planes in Ras Lanuf.
Other Arab countries and Eastern Europe are being paid by the Gaddafi regime to be be used to fight against rebels in Libya.
The accusations that Syria is now involved in the Libyan civil war could further destabilize the already fractured state of Middle Eastern politics with Israel watching with a close eye as alliances are formed between regimes.
The Syrian government has denied the claims as reports come in that mercenaries from Syria, other Arab countries and Eastern Europe are being paid by the Gaddafi regime to be be used to fight against rebels in Libya.
Airstrikes were launched in the eastern port of Ras Lanuf on Tuesday, and jets also struck two hotels in Benghazi where reporters were staying. This proves the destruction a dictator can cause only over protesters, so imagine what would happen If we killed one.

ASSESMENT PRACTICE, 3 TOPICS AND OPINIONS

1.
 becoming an organ doner: 36,000 patients in the United States alone are on waiting lists for organs donated by donors. Less than 50% of these patients will ever receive the organs they need to survive. Every person who becomes an organ donor has the potential to save one or more of these people's lives. this is why I think you should be an organ doner

2.  should dictators be assasianted: The reason leaders are not assassinated is that:  no one is sure who will take that dictator's place, leaving the situation possibly worse than it was before,  it promotes a backlash against the country carrying out the killing as they are seen as being over-invasive of another country's independence, and  failed assassination attempts only empower dictators more.

3. paparazzi: keeping it real: paparazzi should definatley be banned, I think this because it will firstly irritate many people who it happens to and they cannot attack them or they may spend time behind bars, it prevents any privacy of the people who try to do regular things without being spied on and have fake or over exaggerated stories written about them in magazines using the pictures taken.

Seaking Assesment Task

Nature of the Task:

persuasive texts are designed to postition a point of view ( opinion - thesis ) .

texts that succesfully persuade  are usually highly emotive ( emotional words + influence listener/ audience emotions) and effectively balance opinions with facts ( research- logos ).

persuasive texts can make sweeping generalizations (uniformed conclusion), rely on stereotypes and hyperbole and yet still seem credible.

This is because a combination of objective facts 0 and subjective opinion 0 information is usually used to persuade.

careful use of repetition and   high modaltiy of words ( persuasion techniques) can emphatically convey the composer's purpose if it's counterbalanced with the use of statistics, expert evidence and product/idea endorsement from authoritative sources.

moreover effective incorporation of anecdotes ( personal story)  analogies ( comparison ) 0 and inclusive language ( we, us ours etc- include audience) 0 can personalize the message and help connect the composer and their text with its audience.

info:
objectice and subjective

focal point:
thesis

how we are going to convey:

ATTENDING THE CAS SWIMMING ( speech )

pathos,

You hear the crowd roaring, your called up on to the block, the volume of the crowd revs up another gear, you hear the roar of the crowd being thrown across the swimming pool in to the other school as they scream theirs back. Why would you not want to be a part of a moment like this?

CAS swimming only happens once a year, it determines which school has the fastest swimmers, this event is one of the most important during the school year so why not be there? be there and be apart of the crowd, be there to support the swimmer and be there to support your school.

You are standing there with an army of Knox supporters, on top of you seats throwing your fists in the air and screaming war cries until our Knox swimmer's time is to first to hit the electronic board. Every victory brings us closer to the victory of victories. Our swimmer have trained countless hours, pushing themselves out of the their comfort zones to avenge the lose of the previous year, but they cannot win without the support of the crowd behind them.

So lets be there, re-live the being apart of the unforgettable atmosphere, cheer and until we can once again grasp the trophy that Knox so undoubtedly deserves,  we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, this year we, Knox Grammar, will be the victors.

Should the upcoming Sydney modelling still have a place considering the recent natural disaster

Considering the recent natural disasters that have occurred in Queensland and in New Zealand I think that much more time and effort should be put it to restoring what these natural disaster have left behind.
 It's been only a couple of months now but the floods that scattered around  Queensland have left easily visible damage that we can still see at present day. The cost of the total damage from the Queensland flood is up to a staggering four hundred million dollars and it still climbing, the government says the damage bill will reach six hundred million dollars. All the farmers in the area of Queensland have lost up to four hundred million dollars worth of crops. Do you still think we have a place for Sydney modeling?
These natural disasters keep on coming, even more recently cyclone Yasi hit Queensland, once again rupturing everything that stood in its path making the overall cost of both natural disasters reaching one and a half billion dollars. But its not just them that has been effected, so have we. There was hundreds of millions of dollars with of crop damage due to this cyclone and up to seventy five percent of the bananas in Australia thus making them multiply in cost.
So should the Sydney modeling still have a place? considering these disasters, the costs and the lives that have been lost, I think that the Sydney modeling does not deserve a place.
