- How are the Germans (and Japanese) portrayed in the opening sequence? How is irony created?
- How is propaganda and the effect of propaganda portrayed with the introduction of Donald Duck?
- How is irony continued into the breakfast scene?
- How is Naxi Germany portrayed in the opening shot at 3:30?
- What is ironic about the song lyrics regarding work and what is happening in the scene?
- What does the conveyor belt portray regarding the lifestyle of Germans?
- Why do you think that there aren't actually any people that force Donald to work? We only see the ends of bayonets and a speaker.
- What is ironic about the vacation?
- In the dream sequence, how are the Germans portrayed? Why?
- What do the pajamas when we see Donald in his bed tell us?
- What is the Statue of Liberty used to convey?
- How is Hilter portrayed at the end of the film? What is it about his face that is important?
1. the Japanese and the germans in the first scene are seen in the nazi uniform marching and chanting for their leader. The irony in it is that it makes them look like there are happy.
2. propaganda is portrayed in the introduction of the movie by making everything in the shape or having the swastika on it. Everyone is shouting heil Hitler including the rooster in the morning and Donald duck in his sleep.
3. the irony is continued by showing Donald duck eating bread shaped wood and that he is hiding all of his food behind a painting of hitler and then a book of “mein kamf” is thrown in front of him.
4. nazi Germany is shown as being very dark and gloomy at the shot at 3:30. It shows very dirty factories spread across Germany and swastikas everywhere. This shot was trying to tell us that it was a bad place to be for most people.
5. the irony in the song lyrics is that what they are saying is actually what Donald duck has to do. The lyrics are somewhat telling Donald duck what to do.
6. the conveyer belt portrays the life of germans as very hard because the amounts of shells keep increasing and the belt kept getting faster and faster.
7. there are no other people telling Donald duck what to do because they’re possibly doing the same. There are bayonets and a speaker telling Donald what to do because it makes it seem more vicious.
8. the irony in the vacation is that it is just a lie to get Donald to work harder.
9. in the dream sequence the Germans/nazi’s are portrayed as being very demanding, vicious and obesest with the Fueherer. This was done to give the viewer an idea of what it was like in those times.
10. the pyjamas tell us that Donald is most likely a patriot of America.
11. The statue of liberty conveys freedom of the Europeans in America
12. Hitlers face is very ugly and mean looking; his nose is big, eyes are close together and his face is very tensed. This shows how much of a nutcase Hitler is.
Why is this a representation of propaganda? Why is it actually ironic considering the way the Nazi's are portrayed?
- Because of how everything thing is exaggerated e.g. everything living or not is saying heil hitler. This is ironic because despite the exaggeration used to portray the nazi’s it was actually quite similar.
Who are the villains, victims, and heroes?
- the German Nazi’s are the villains
- the victim is Donald duck
- heroes could possibly be the Americans
How are the portrayed? The Germans are shown as being very strict, mean and demanding.
Donald duck is portrayed as being hard working and innocent. The Americans are not properly portrayed and are only represented the Donald’s patriotism.
