auschwitz q's

the five visual effects:

1.  vectors have been used on the barbed wire to draw your eye over to the watch tower.
2.  the line of the perfectly straight barbed wire makes it seem like and impossible camp and that it is very well organised.
3.  there are dull cold colors in the  picture to represent how horrible Auschwitz was.
4. composition - in the middle ground is the fence and a building inside auswitz. In the foreground you can see the fence and the barbed wire.  In the background lies the fence and watch tower.
5. the visual elements in this picture evokes a sad and horrified emotion from the viewer because of how the elements such as the cold colours captured as well as watch towers and two sets of barbed wire fences create a feeling of no escape in the viewer.
6. Auschwitz is represented as a place where dark things have happened and a place which cannot escape from.

7. The visual techniques such as the dark and gloomy colours captured in this photo make it particularly engaging. Once again the colours used evoke a very dark and depressing emotion in the viewer.  The foreground, middle ground and background are almost all the same; all you can see are the walls, openings and dull lights

Donald Duck cartoon Q's

  1. How are the Germans (and Japanese) portrayed in the opening sequence? How is irony created?
  2. How is propaganda and the effect of propaganda portrayed with the introduction of Donald Duck?
  3. How is irony continued into the breakfast scene?
  4. How is Naxi Germany portrayed in the opening shot at 3:30?
  5. What is ironic about the song lyrics regarding work and what is happening in the scene?
  6. What does the conveyor belt portray regarding the lifestyle of Germans?
  7. Why do you think that there aren't actually any people that force Donald to work? We only see the ends of bayonets and a speaker.
  8. What is ironic about the vacation?
  9. In the dream sequence, how are the Germans portrayed? Why?
  10. What do the pajamas when we see Donald in his bed tell us?
  11. What is the Statue of Liberty used to convey?
  12. How is Hilter portrayed at the end of the film? What is it about his face that is important?
1. the Japanese and the germans in the first scene are seen in the nazi uniform marching and chanting for their leader.  The irony in it is that it makes them look like there are happy.
2. propaganda is portrayed in the introduction of the movie by making everything in the shape or having the swastika on it. Everyone is shouting heil Hitler including the rooster in the morning and Donald duck in his sleep.
3. the irony is continued by showing Donald duck eating bread shaped wood and that he is hiding all of his food behind a painting of hitler and then a book of “mein kamf” is thrown in front of him.
4. nazi Germany is shown as being very dark and gloomy at the shot at 3:30. It shows very dirty factories spread across Germany and swastikas everywhere. This shot was trying to tell us that it was a bad place to be for most people.
5.  the irony in the song lyrics is that what they are saying is actually what Donald duck has to do. The lyrics are somewhat telling Donald duck what to do.
6. the conveyer belt portrays the life of germans as very hard because the amounts of shells keep increasing and the belt kept getting faster and faster.
7. there are no other people telling Donald duck what to do because they’re possibly doing the same. There are bayonets and a speaker telling Donald what to do because it makes it seem more vicious.
8. the irony in the vacation is that it is just a lie to get Donald to work harder.
9. in the dream sequence the Germans/nazi’s are portrayed as being very demanding, vicious and obesest with the Fueherer. This was done to give the viewer an idea of what it was like in those times.
10. the pyjamas tell us that Donald is most likely a patriot of America.
11. The statue of liberty conveys freedom of the Europeans in America
12.  Hitlers face is very ugly and mean looking; his nose is big, eyes are close together and his face is very tensed. This shows how much of a nutcase Hitler is.

Why is this a representation of propaganda? Why is it actually ironic considering the way the Nazi's are portrayed?
-          Because of how everything thing is exaggerated e.g.  everything living or not is saying heil hitler. This is ironic because despite the exaggeration used to portray the nazi’s it was actually quite similar.
Who are the villains, victims, and heroes?
- the German Nazi’s are the villains
- the victim is Donald duck
-  heroes could possibly be the Americans

How are the portrayed? The Germans are shown as being very strict, mean and demanding.
Donald duck is portrayed as being hard working and innocent. The Americans are not properly portrayed and are only represented the Donald’s patriotism.

Life is beautiful essay

In Life is Beautiful the audience is engaged by the unique way the holocaust is looked upon. The combination of the personalities used by the three main characters; Joshua, Guido and Dora, steers the audience in to focusing mostly on the comedic side of the movie despite how dark and daunting the genre is and on the feelings of Joshua instead of what’s  really happening to him.
In the first half of the movie, there is no plot to it. During this first half of the movie there is little warning as to what is going to happen to the characters and instead just shows a combination of happy, funny and romantic events. This allows the viewers to be able to adapt better to the character and their personalities.  This is why the director Roberto Benigni postpones the  complication of the movie. Because of this sudden turning point of the movie the audience cannot accommodate well enough to what its main theme really is because they are still adjusted to the happy and funny side of the movie, therefore making the audience view the holocaust differently to a movie where the theme is constant.
Another reason which makes the viewer’s experience of the holocaust different in the movie  Life is Beautiful , than any other movie with the same theme is the way the characters personality barely change when they become victims of the Jewish death camp, but there are reasons for this.  Because of the unexpected turning point of the movie, Guido’s son Joshua is un-aware of what is going on. So for Joshua’s sake, Guido pretends to Joshua that they are going on a competition camp, where the winner, who must reach one thousand points, wins a tank. Guido does this because for Joshua’s birthday, he wanted a toy tank, pretending that the death camp is all just a game and the prize is a real tank keeps Joshua’s spirits high and more importantly protects his innocents. For Guido to continuously do this he must behave exactly the same as he did before the death camp, in the death camp and commit heroic acts and be a larrikin at the same time. An example of how he has done both is when the Nazi commander gives instructions of the death camp and Guido volunteers to translate, even though he cannot understand German he translates the German in to saying instructions about the pretend game instead.
The unique and comedic heroism displayed in the movie by Guido overall makes the personality and behaviour of Dora, himself and Joshua remain the same and the unique connection between the audience and the characters because of the delayed complication makes the presentation of the holocaust theme different  in Life is beautiful, to any other holocaust movie.

Life is Beatiful best scene

1. In the scene a German Nazi walks in to the room and is giving instruction but before he does he askes who can speak German so he can translate what he says. Guido walks up and pretends he knows how to speak German even though he doesn't know what he is saying he pretends he is translating it and says something completely different, pretending he is talking about a game, for his son's sake.

2. in this scene The german Nazi is the villain, Because of how he treats the jews and what he would of really been saying to the nazi's.Guido is the hero because he had the bravery to come up and pretend he was translating what the German nazi was saying.

3.   the long shot is used on the german to shows their whole body to express doninance, the shots of guido are more close up. The shot of Guido and the soldier are in height order possibley to show order of power. Their is a lot of juxtaposition that has been used between the Germans an the Jews.

The decision is whether he is going to go to battle school. A reason for it is so he can become a commander like in the movies and especially so he can stay away from peter. He decides to go with graff to battle schoolwhen he thought of all the movies of the bugger wars and especially because that graff said theat he might just save to world.
